just a quick question, is anything new or original in music anymore or just a pale imitation of what has come before? i'd love to hear everybody's views on this.

Nothing is new. Everything has already been done at some point in the very long history of music in one way or another. It's as simple as that. And todays musicians and composers are all influenced too much by their predecescors (or however you spell this...) to be truly original. These influences can and will all be heard more or less in their music.

That said: when not looking at music that is shoved down our throats by the massmedia as being "the new hot thing around" but at what is all boilling underneath in the very dark corners of little venues, internetradio, profilepages and the likes of that, you WILL find original music, "new" genres, interesting never-been-done-before crossovers and stuff like that. It IS out there, but it will not be very likely to be played on national radiostations so the construction-site across the street from you can terrorise you with it very soon. So you have to go out and search for yourself, don't sit back and wait with your arms crossed untill it reaches you.

My couple of cents and the odd old button or two...

Someone pointed me to Imogen Heap recently.
What a find.
Try listening to some and then come back to this question.
