MTM Studio Net

Hi, I'm starting university in a week, i will be studying music technology and i need to bag myself a decent pair of headphones.
I have up to about £250 max. I am seriously considering the beats by dre, does anyone have any other suggestions or any personal experience with these particular headphones.
Please give your honest opinion on what you think would be the best pair for my course.
I will also be using the headphones i buy for day to day listening of my ipod.
Thanks again.

With that kind of a budget I'd be looking to get a decent pair of cans from a reputable manufacturer with a good history in the industry, rather than a fashion statement by Dr Dre. AKG, BeyerDynamic, Sennheiser, and Sony (off the top of my head) all make some excellent headphones for this price, and I'd take a pair from any of those before even looking at the Beats.

so would you say that it would be possible to get a pair as decent as the beats from sony, sennheiser or AKG for a much lower price? i've heard some great reviews on the beats but i do have my doubts.

I've not heard The Beats, and I'm sure Dre has made sure they have a lot going for them, I would imagine they've got a lot of bass but I doubt they're all that accurate especially for mixing/mastering with. I also imagine you're going to be paying a certain amount for the "by Dre" logo. Whereas if you go for a pair from one of the more traditional manufacturers you are more likely to get an accurate sonic reflection of your mixes. I can't promise they'll look as cool, but you'll probably save yourself some money and make better mixes.

I have used AKG's and they are good. But I would suggest you to never mix on any headphones. I am 100% sure, if you do your mixes will sound bad on studio monitors. I have experienced this a lot and learned different aspects of how our ears perceived sound.

Cheers,
