Speaking personally. If I didn't have my computer I wouldn't be making music at all!! some might say I still don't!!! I have gone back to listening to Kraftwerk recently and their strictly robotic music had its own appeal. They survived for years...

Great Thanks Mark. I will try it out and let you know how I get on. I find a simple bass riff can inspire me to write and simple key changes like this are a real boon. Cheers for your input Peter

Thanks Mark I am using readon 4.1 and I have a Novation 25LE controller so I should be able to do this. Can I transpose a sequence form the Keyboard directly or one of the rotary dials? Cheers for youor input P

If you want to tranpose a track, just select all note and come to Midi - tranpose. If you want to fast-tranpose a verse, select , rite click ur mouse, and choose "show info". You will see some text writen up on the file, one of them is transpose, ...

It seems Cubse step sequncer doesnt respons to a live MIDI input and nor does the reason ones as far as I can tell. I'll have to break out the old Pro one it seems. Maybe this is a niche not yet exploited by 3rd party VST? P

Any Joy Pete, i had a browse around for you, but cant find anything on this, sorry.

Songwriting Weekend

Absolutely fantastic songwriting retreat weekend at Farnecombe Estate in the Cotswolds.
I learned loads about harmonic pace, melodic motifs and more effective lyric writing. Some great ideas also about beating writers block and wiritng songs with a core concept.
A couple of waltz ballads came out of it which are being recorded at the moment.
Hope to be on site a little more and post more music thanks to the folks here for their recent guidance particularly with regard to mastering recorded track… Continue

Bass heavy, woolly and lacking brightness!!!

This could be used to describe me as well as my mixes.
I think I have worked out what I am doing wrong.
Sitting too close to the monitors which are set too wide and not pointing in enough.
Better to sit further back or twist the monitors in?
Cheers

Balladette project posted to my music player

This project has been the most extensive to date. I started with a simple piano version then took the score to my piano teacher who made suggestions for development. Over the next few weeks I have added cello, string, flute and oboe parts and used Sibelius to produce a score at the end of each development period. I have learned how some instruments have certain ranges and they they need to be notated in a particular way. I also incorporated many idea learned from my collaboration with Howard Wil… Continue

Randomly East to West - MTM Collaboration

The track 'Randomly East to West' is a collaborative track between Howard Williams and myself. We met on MTM forums and agreed to a songwriting game each adding one part before sending it by email to our collaboration partner. We agreed it should be limited to 16 tracks although I didn't use that many in the end. We agreed a mix down date for the finished product, then shared our results which turned out to be quite different despite the same MIDI composition file.

From a personal perspective I… Continue

Imogen Heap

Thanks to the guy who pointed me at this artist.
Initial listens are keeping me hitting the replay button.
A bit like Tori Amos but with a greater musical range of styles.
Just love 'If only I were a butterfly' especially the huge drums and synth doodles on the lead out of the track.

Hi
Thanks for taking time to listen to the tunes. Good feedback cheers!
We have focusrite twin trak and don't use phantom power as we don't record vocals with it. It's mainly used for keyboards and guitar (mono) with a mid scoop @ 20Hz for a smoothing off
We do have two focusrite trak masters and have used phantom power for vox with no problems. I've found their stuff to work well for lots of applications.
Thanks again for listening

Just had a listen through your stuff, very good. I always enjoy a nice diverse selection of music. Balladette Orchastrel was my favorite and Memories of Kate was another. Keep up the excellent work, you have a talent for sure.

its not a night course mate, just ask your local college if they have any part time A level courses in music tech or wether they do a national diploma in music. All colleges do it so you should be able to get on one somewhere..

Good luck to ya!!

PS: Just having a listen to your tunes right now.. really nice work mate! Reminds me very much of XTC's work! Babies in my Mind is good enough for commercial airplay - you should release it if you can!

One quick question on your recordings... you have really nice stereo panned drums throughout your tracks... is it an accoustic kit, or are you just using some really NICE samples there? The kick and toms have a lot of warmth to them and the cymbal rides and crashes sounds more real than sampled! Of course, sampled drums are usually recorded using real drums, so... *shrugs* It's hard to tell. :)

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback on "Coming Home" - I can't claim to be the songwriter (or the vocalist for that matter) though... I just did the arrangement and recording. I think with what I've learnt in the last 12 months I'd probably to a better job if I recorded it again, but *shrugs* it was a point in time and I'm proud of it. :)
