Profile Information

How would you categorise your musical output?
Eclectic mix of everything from folk to funk, disco to D&B, jazz to zydeco, rock to retro psychedelia. Genre's are useful for classifying individual tracks, but I don't see them as pigeonholes that my works need to fit into.
What are your favourite pieces of studio hardware?
Tascam FW1804, Alto CLE 8.0, Alto DI-4, Yamaha Motif ES Rack Synth, Roland RSM 90 Monitors. Would love to add a Tascam FW1884 to the rig in the future to get access to motorized controllers and extra Mic pres. Once I win the lottery I'll add a couple of Focusrite 828s with the ADAT expansion to the system and move to a Mackie X.200 mixer and finally get me those expensive AKG and Neumann mics I've been drooling over for a decade or so.
Which Digital Audio Workstation application do you use?
Cakewalk Sonar 7.0 Producer, Reason 4.0 + various CM Studio plugins.
What's your favourite digital instrument?
Thor is pretty cool - looking forward to getting deeper into the guts of it to find out how to make it really sing. Dimension's not a bad soft-synth either.
Who are your musical/production influences or heroes?
Paul Mac, Daniel Johns, Ben Folds, Bob Clearmountain, Midnight Oil, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave (Birthday Party/Bad Seeds/Grinderman - it's all good), Tori Amos, Mike Oldfield

Sunset

Okay... it's true - I've been slack as far as MTMStudioNet is concerned. I've been busy with work and working on a few projects at once for the last 2 months or so... some of them work related, others not.

One of the projects I've been working on is "Sunset", a composition of which I've just posted up a rough cut to this site. It doesn't have any vocals yet - I haven't written any - still trying to wrap my head around how to make vocals work with the tune which almost stands on its own. Part of… Continue

Taking a breather in "Sunny" Seattle

Howdy folks - I figured I'd throw down a quick blog note to udpate you on what's going on.

I'm currently back in Seattle (after a 3 week stint back in Adelaide) and hurtling towards the finishing line of the professional development program I've been on since the first week of April. I've learnt a lot about myself, and picked up a new nickname in the process - my "Call-Sign" in the program is "I/O"! Kind of makes sense that I hang about on music technology sites, right? ;)

Seattle's a really i… Continue

Hello EV,

Really like the feel to your rough mix tune, really sounds great.

Ahhh the vocals let's see.

Male or female vocals would work great you could do the Lu Reed thing in and around the choruses split it up with spoken word and sing it out as well. Some fine piano and guitar solos fills would be a nice plus from what I hear. a guitar with a little bit of overdrive would work well. Finding the right vocalist with the right tone male or female is whats gonna be the deciding factor on who you chose to sing the song.

Have a great one,

DJ.

Hi there.
Interesting about the XTC comment. I was using Peter Gabriel's 3rd album as a reference for the drums and this album was engineered by High Padgham and Nick Launay who also engineered XTC albums and were the first to use gated reverb on drums. Not sure if XTC also recorded at the Stoneroom in Townhouse Studios but it was tie up wouldn't it. Nick Launay went on to help Kate Bush produce the Dreaming album as well I seem to recall.

Cheers for now

Just wanted to say thanks for your recent contributions on the site, detailed and informative. I have learned loads from your wisdom. Is that a Privia Piano I spotted in your gallery? I got the 310 and like it very much.
All the best
Peter

Wow... thanks on the mastering comment. Currently, I use only Sony MDR-V600 stereo headphones to mix and master. That's all the monitors I can afford for now. I do test my final mixes in various boom boxes though.
