Profile Information

How would you categorise your musical output?
Working and collaborating within a number of styles Grime, hiphop, R'n'B, Punk, Metal, Gothic, Industrial, Ambient, Electronica, Soundtracks, Production, Engineering, Programming and Stuff.
What are your favourite pieces of studio hardware?
Doors and Windows are pretty neat, most digital recorders do a reasonable job, but a good microphone is the most important thing, swivel chairs are fun but can cause distractions from the job in hand, but to me a kettle is indispensable.
Which Digital Audio Workstation application do you use?
Cubase, Logic, Reason
What's your favourite digital instrument?
Reason i guess, its the one i use the most.
Who are your musical/production influences or heroes?
Too many to mention them all, Ennio Morricone, Lee Perry, Ska, Jungle, Led Zeppelin, Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy, Black Dog, Dead Kennedys, Crass, Frank Zappa,The Rolling Stones, The Prodigy,The Beastie Boys, and i can't be bothered to write any more.

Yes

After working as a live sound engineer for a number of years and then studying sound recording and music technology at the Islington Music Workshop I am now involved in a number of teaching and community music projects:

Kik Music, empowering young people through music
http://www.kikmusic.org.uk/

Madcap Music, youth group and recording studio
http://www.madcapmusicproject.co.uk

MK Music Tech, music technology and production tuition
http://www.myspace.com/mkmusictech

I have also had over four years experience of working with young people in developing their musical skills on a variety of projects including:

The Mobile Play Project, a MK council scheme aimed at 14-18 year olds, I provided support on recording projects and also provided tuition in using Reason music software for an ACE accredited course with the aim of creating a relaxed but ordered environment for the students to work within.

The Reaching Out Project, working with school leavers on writing, recording and performing music as a means to empower them as individuals culminating in a presentation and performance for an audience including the mayor and other council officials.

Madcap Arts Collective, a youth club for 14-18 year olds with songwriting, recordings and regular performances generated within an atmosphere of mutual respect using collaberetion and teamwork as a means to encourage creativity and an inclusive environment.

The community outreach thing is a really cool thing to do with those tracks! Now that I understand the context it makes a lot more sense!

Keep up the good work (and the good works)!

Cheers

Hi Gawain - awesome tracks - you've done a great job with the mixdowns on all of them and I'm loving those fat synth lines and drum tracks. Are you using a sampler/drum machine for the beats? Or just using what's possible in the DAW tools you've got access to?

The only advice I can give you is that with loop based production a lack of a vocal part sort of highlights the fact that you're using repetitive loops - even if you can get some sampled vocals (e.g. from old movies/TV shows/radio shows - some of which might even be in the public domain) it will add an extra layer of polish to what are already very well produced tracks. Do you have any MC pals who could add some rhyming over the top of the tracks you've already got? Have a listen to some outfits like the Avalanches or Hilltop Hoods to get an idea of the sort of thing I mean.

Cheers

Hi Gawaine, cheers for the add. Enjoying your music mate, especially Desert Strings - sounds a bit Kate Bush-like. I can envisage her vocals on top. Nice. Thanks again.
