It gave me good excuse to get my Blade Runner soundtrack out and play loud in the car! It's still an amazing piece of work - even though it's almost 30 years old!

Hi Paul, Given the time the Blade Runner soundtrack was recorded, and the super-lush sound that dominates the mix, I'd say the original device was one of the Lexicon's early digital reverbs - like the Lexicon 224. Getting this smoothness of rever...

Music Tech

It all started with a four-track and a Casio CZ-3000…

The studio might have grown in size somewhat, but I still have just as much fun making music on a daily basis! My time is divided between writing for Music Tech Magazine (including cover features, the Logic Pro Workshops, reviews and 10MMs) and composing production music for the likes of BMG Zomba, Universal, and Focus Music. Listen carefully, and you might have heard some of my tracks on BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five.

I’ve written for the magazine since issue 1, and I’m passionate about bringing the burning issues and skills of working in the music industry to as many people as possible. The collision between creativity and technology is always going to be an interesting area - changing and developing at an astonishing rate - so it’s great to be able explore and document this as part of the process of putting the magazine together.

Happy music making!

Logic 8 is here!

Just got back from a meeting with Apple where I had my first look at the new Logic Pro 8! Needless to say, we’re cracking straight on with a full review, which should appear in the issue hitting the shelves on the 18th October.

First impressions? Well, Apple have certainly been busy…but at the same time, diehard Logic users will be pleased to note that it’s still the same old Logic ‘under the bonnet’ (in other words, the environment is still there!). The system does seem a lot more approachable… Continue

Going deep

Finally got round to installing my shiny new subwoofer yesterday, and I’m now experiencing several extra octaves of bass – pure joy! The only catch, alas, is the task of ‘bedding in’ the system for a few hours before I get to work with it. Unfortunately, this means listening to lots of great CDs, enjoying all the bits that I couldn’t hear before. So far, I’ve had no complaints from the neighbours…although I don’t know how long that’s going to last!
