Hi Nate
A big thanks for your comments! Much appeciated. If you need a specific sample (say, the moogbass on a song or a beat), let me know and I can forward on as a wav to your email. We get a lot of good stuff sent in for projects that we can use. I was using a motif 88 live recently and the sounds were top dog. Have you looked at the Nord gear...it's really contempory sounding and you can get your own sounds real quick
All the best Stephen
Hi Nate
I listened again to the previous two. "da reign" is real nice..do I hear a sample of "walking in the rain?"i think an old motown / diana ross tune.
Good stuff. The two hood jazz tunes gets our votes
Cheers
Stephen
Dude check out the beat on my page called "1st Blade". I made it a while back with some sample chops. The bass is a bit shocking but have a listen it might help. I did a similar thing with the beat "Sumo", also on my page. Both havent got lots goin on which some times i think can be better (def when it comes to Hip Hop).
The drum timing is gettin better but still needs work in places ( a few random snares are just out there?), its just a bit all over the shop. The samples aint that great either. It just sounds like your trying to chop up lots of different samples and make them fit and they dont.
No offence stop watching those Boon Doc you tube videos for a minute.. That dude is a genuis sample chopper and tryin to do that style (this is what it sounds like) at this level is goin make shit sound worse..
They just still arent happenin and flowin correctly, you should be able to nod ur head to Hip Hop and (no offence) you cant. The track Midnight, did you use an already made drum loop?? (only reason I ask this is cos the beat in places sounds on time) If u didnt this is by far the best thing u have done..
Beatology 4 is a all over the place.. Beatology 8 on the other hand aint perfect but I can hear u makin some progress. Do one track at a time, and take alot of time gettin it sound spot on dont rush. Get on of ur boys round, play it and see if u can bop ur heads to it. Dont bite somone elses style too much but listen to some tunes man, and get a feel for the flow, (the beat, the bass, the instruments).
Then take it one step at a time. Check out my tune Nice N Simple, I made it to try steer u in the right direction..
Been listening to ur latest tracks u got up here..I totally agree with Kashif, leave the MPC alone for a bit and try usin Reason or something similar, I use FLStudio8 and Reason 4 they are great programs and easy to use.(flstudio8 online only cost me £100 and was def worth it) .
If u cant bear to part with the MPC then start with some real simple loops, nice and short-4bars. As u wanna make Hip Hop, most of it is in 4 bar loops (check out 9th wonder, RZA, Premmo etc). I suggest loading up a kick, snare, open hat and hi hat (maybe a ride or clap to mix it up a bit aswell). Mess about for a few mins to get a feel for a beat, but when doing this have the MPC running so you can see when the loop ends etc, but dont record yet. Once ur happy with the beat u got goin on, then start recording.
Now when I first started usin an MPC I recorded a bit at a time, I would always start with the kick first, then once I was happy with that and it sounded half descent I would record the snare, hi hat etc all one at a time. Okay so now I would have a beat with a few different sounds going on. Are u aware of the step edit function on the MPC?? if not check out the manual. Basically I found this feature vhandy when I first started out, once u got ur basic beat press mode and pad14/step edit. This then brings up an all events page and shows u which pad u hit, at what time in the loop you hit it, the duration of each hit, etc. What I used to do look up all my kicks, and just basically tweaked them about till they all sounded on time, then i would repeat this with all the other events i,e snares hats etc..Just check out the manual its a piece of piss once you done it a few times.. This process is very basic and kinda does take a bit of time but its def worth it.
I just put up a track called Nice'N'Simple, its very very basic check it out and hopefully it will point u in the right direction. I made it using my MPC and Reason 4.
