Profile

How would you categorise your musical output?
I record and produce albums in my studio in Stockholm. Both bands and artists. I started the studio in the mid 90's at home. After a couple of years the studio grew and I got a small room. After a while that room became a bit too small and I moved to a bigger room.

Due to the slightly odd and eclectic equipment I have in the studio I often get requests to sort stuff out or "make it sound cool". I also have artists coming in to do a day or two of overdubs with "real" instruments.

For more info please visit www.roth-handle.nu

Some of the artists I am currently working with or have worked with.

The Opium Cartel (Nor) - Thieves Kitchen (U.K) - Rokit Scientik - Wendy McNeill (Can) - Martin Ekman - Nutcase music - Vijaya - Tarantula - Sophie Rockwell (fr) - Wan Light - Celestine - AK-momo - Blanc (fr) - Two times the trauma - Devi - Montage - Brighteye Brison - Molesome - Nanook of the north - Johan Moraeus - Änglagård - Deadwood Forest (U.S)- Ludvig Andersson - Pineforest Crunch - Clockwork - Kit le Fever - White Willow (nor) - Akaba - Sofia Talvik - Freddie Wadling - Geller - Daniel Lemma - Anders Nordberg - The grand opening - Grand tone music - Andreas & Jag - Jared Eggers (U.S)
What are your favourite pieces of studio hardware?
I have no software so it is more or less all hardware. My favorite instruments are my Mellotrons, The Chamberlin Rhytmmate, my optical organs such as the mattel optigan, Vako orchestron and the chilton talentmaker. I have a bunch of symths like moogs and korgs but my oddest one is without doubt Benny Anderssons Yamaha GX-1 that used to be in the famous Polar studio. 250 kg of analog polyphonic synthy goodness. When it comes to acoustic instruments my favorites are vibraphones, celestes and baritone guitars. I have recently acquiered a pipe organ that is also making it fast to the top 5 list.
Which Digital Audio Workstation application do you use?
None. I record using 2 Akai DPS-16 and one DPS-12. I like the idea of having faders and knobs on things.
What's your favourite digital instrument?
Hmm...tough one. The frostwave Sonic Alienator ?
Who are your musical/production influences or heroes?
Esquivel Les Baxter Eartha Kitt Korla Pandit Danny Elfman Raymond Scott Yma Sumac Glenn Campbell Kraftwerk Can King Crimson Brian Wilson Jon Brion Brian Eno

This months record tips.

Besides running a studio and doing the occasional live show I also do a bit of writing…Which I throroughly enjoy if I am in the mood…If I am not it feels a bit like ripping gaffer tape from my eye balls. So I have my little colomn and then I have my little review section… And this month I came across two wonderful albums that made me very happy. And I think they just might make you happy too… So please rush off to your next record store (he he he ) and pick up your copies of… Bowerbirds – Hym… Continue

The forgotten language of Light

On Thursday we had another rehearsal with band never known as the leaving. This is the band with me Henrik Frestadius, Stefan Axelssen and Nille Perned. This is what Mosebacke wrote about us concerning our lack of name…We are playing at Mosebacke ion Stockholm on Sunday night. Vad gör man när ett av stans absolut bästa och hypade osignade band vägrar skaffa sig ett bandnamn? Tja man bokar in dom på en spelning och får förklara för folk att här spelar minsann killen som producerat Kent, Broder D… Continue

The champagne bubble that was quiet...

There is always this small bump in champagne bubbles sparkle on it’s way to the surface. You know that little skip and twist it does...well I met this guy on Sunday night who didn’t really have that. He seemed confused and in a slightly interrogative mood. But he was quiet. Didn’t say a word. I got the feeling that there would be time for talking later. When I met him he seemed occupied with eating and sleeping. He weighs 3800g (that is metric kids) and is 50cm long. He is my son. His mother is… Continue

Tubular bells, and distorted cell phones.

So…Saturday afternoon in a rainy Stockholm. And it has been a very slow day indeed. I was supposed to have been rehearsing with the Leaving but Nille had to work so it was cancelled. I was really looking forward to it. For one thing I am really enjoying playing drums at the moment. I find to be very rewarding. The effects of what you do in a rehearsal situation are pretty immediate. Working with a recording is without doubt a slower process…Even though I try to keep the tempo up. Yesterday I fi… Continue

Drums and Orchestrons.

Yesterday was a really necessary and interesting day in the studio. I am still working on the rhys Marsh track Afterglow. One of the best things of having your own studio space in comparison to having it at home or in a little project area is that when you are tired and want to go home you just turn off the lights and walk out. When you have the stuff at home everything becomes extremely unliveable very quickly. The problem with just walking out is that everything looks the same when you get the… Continue

Hi Mattias,
Thanks for the friends add.

Interesting collection of materials you have up here, some very esoteric pieces, high art.
Heard one of your tracks on the TV, AK Momo - Greasy Spoon, I think. Clarks shoes Ad. A while back; l actually got excited when I heard it emanating from the telly, started ranting on "that's mattias' work", everyone looking at me in bafflement.
LOL.

Really good work man.

Thanks,
Throbber.

Hi,
I really like you analog studio, looks impressive and sounds warm :)
I was listening to your tracks and reckon a Matrix sample there in your track "Jimmy Onion", yeah a sample from movie Matrix's soundtrack.
Very famous Trombone sample from movie's soundtrack it comes at 00:36.
Is it from the original soundtrack ?

Thanks,
Kashif
